Why do 100 year old steam heat radiators squirt water ?

I have a new furnace but VERY old radiators and the ones on the second floor have caused water damage to the first floor ceilings. One actually squirts water out the steam escape valve and the other I believe, leaks at the shut off. Any ideas about this

If it's leaking at the valve stem you can replace that pretty easily--a local small hardware store should carry them. We recently had leaking at the union between the radiator and the supply/return, which just required tightening with a nice big wrench.
